Short Answer:
Read the story on Page A1 "Fight for 'school choice' likely different this year" and answer the following questions.
A. Why does Dan Patrick think its important for public tax money to be made available to any public school student who wants to attend a private school?
Dan Patrick thinks that its important for public tax money to be made available to any public school student who wants to attend private school because it could save a lot of money for public schools and improve education in the state. He thinks that children that live in poorer areas and schools should have the opportunity to go to a good school and get a better education.
B. Why do opponents of his legislation, like Ken Zarifis president of Education Austin the largest AISD teachers union, think this use of public tax money is illegal and shouldn't been allowed to happen?
The people who oppose this idea and think its illegal say that using the tax money is illegal because taxpayers in Austin give their tax money to the city and state and expect it to be used in ways that will benefit the city. They say that we as a city cannot afford to send underprivileged children to private school for a better education and the money shouldn't be going to that.
C. Which side of this argument do you think is correct? WHY
I think that the second opinion is correct because citizens of Austin pays tons of money a year in taxes because they are forced to and if they don't pay it on time, they just end up having to pay more so by using that money for children to go to private school and set up more school groups it wouldn't be fair. even though some children do need a better education, we can't use that money coming from the taxes of the people in Austin and around the state.
D. If your parents had access to a set amount of money and were able to use that to help pay for a private school education for you, do you think you would want to go to a private school?
Im not sure if i would want to go to a private school because I like seeing all the friends that I have now and you get such a different experience in a public school than you would get at a private school, good and bad, but also a private school might be fun. Overall I'm not sure if i would like my parents to have to pay a ton of money to go to a private school when we could use it for other more important things and go to a public school that didn't cost nearly as much money.
E. What if your parents only got enough to pay for part of that private school?
I still wouldn't want to attend a private high school, but maybe if it was a college I would try and help them pay for it because lots of schools are expensive, even schools that aren't private. It just wouldn't be as much fun to me because I have gone to public school my entire life.
